Here is what the job actually involves. If a quote you are comparing does not mention most of it, that is where the difference in price is.
- Cleaned and stripped back — a coating over grey, weathered timber has nothing to grip
- Loose boards, popped nails and split rails dealt with before finishing
- Sanded where the surface is rough enough to hold water
- Stain or paint chosen for exposure — a south-facing deck and a shaded fence are different problems
- Timed to the weather, since a finish rained on before it sets has to come off again
